“If you’re depressed, you’re living in the past. If you’re anxious, you’re living in the future. If you are at peace, you’re living in the present.” – Lao Tzu, Chinese philosopher.

Quite true, isn’t it? As long as you’re living in any other frame of mind except for the present, you’ll always be at conflict.

But how many of us would agree to be ‘at peace’ despite vehemently claiming to live in the present?

Ask yourself. How peaceful are you at this moment, reading my blog?

Allow me to assume that you’re not completely content with your life, or else you wouldn’t have come this way. But I’m glad that you stopped by because a few years ago, I was exactly in your shoes – or whatever you’re wearing right now.

And they fitted well.

Hi, I’m Lola. And nice to meet you, too!

Being at peace is purely subjective. Come to think of it; what’s peaceful for the spider is chaotic for the fly.

So, while I can totally relate to Lao Tzu’s quote on spiritual awakening & peace, I still beg to differ.

A couple of years ago, I was lost. I couldn’t find the purpose of my life, the path into the future, and the reason for my being. I was anxious, depressed, and confused. Life seemed bleak, and although I had 2 beautiful children under my wing, I was emotionally crippled.

But then I came across ‘meditation’ on social media and its success stories. Desperate to bring any semblance of normality, I latched onto it.

Channeling your ‘self’ is the first step towards inner peace, which ultimately leads you to spiritual awakening and enlightenment. And although reading it like that may sound like a straightforward process, it most certainly is not.

Meditation helped me find my purpose (and peace) in life

Spiritual awakening is typically defined as an intense experience that connects one person to his/her spirit or sense of ‘self.’ Take it from me; spiritual awakening is a highly personal, multilayered, and complex process. And most of us who claim to have completed that journey give due credit to none other than the practice of meditation and daily journaling.

Spiritual awakening can happen spontaneously or at a so-called “Aha moment.” Either way, it is a process of rising above the ordinary consciousness, establishing a connection between body and soul, and synchronizing energies from both the realms (psychic & physical) to achieve oneness.

Having been on that path, here are the basic stages that occur on your journey to spirituality. By identifying the stage you’re at with your current frame of mind, I can hold your hand to help you complete the process.

  • Stage 1: Self-exploratory questions flooding your mind; Who am I? Why am I here? What’s my purpose?
  • Stage 2: Feeling lost (like I felt) and disconnected from society and/or people.
  • Stage 3: Observing your surroundings and realizing that the world is evolving on its own without human intervention.
  • Stage 4: Reflecting on these by meditating and ultimately connecting to the God within us; the one that transcends physical consciousness.
  • Stage 5: Achieving profound self-awareness, having merged your soul with nature, and finding out that peace already resides in you.

Besides mindfulness and meditation – a daily practice to contemplate, filter thoughts, and connect to the divine – I found daily journaling extremely helpful in the process.

If you’re not living a fulfilling life; are you even alive?

Trust me; life is a lot more than work, binge-watching Netflix, and accumulating wealth. Daily journaling helped me achieve a strong sense of self. By transferring my emotions, fantasies, and thoughts onto a blank page, I found a buffer between myself and the world.

My top pick is A Daily Dose of Gratitude Journal as the most effective tool for becoming self-aware, gratifying, and organized. The prompts in this journal encourage kindness, shed light on minor things in life that we neglect, and keep us feeling fulfilled. The uplifting quotes from philosophers on every alternate page get you moving; until you realize that the daily doses helped you immensely in becoming spiritually awakened.

Journaling may sound like a teenage habit, however, when you manifest the nature of your mind into the material, you instantly build a deeper relationship with your inner world. Pair it with a meditation routine on the balcony every sunrise, and you’ll find yourself experiencing love, peace, unity, bliss, and freedom from all fears.

You’ll sail through life smoothly, despite any challenge storming your way.
